그냥 아이폰 2009/02/28 22:10 by 세리자와

오늘 소프트방크에 갔다가 열받았는데 Reddit에 링크가 올라왔길래 홧김에 길게 적어버렸다. ㅋㅋㅋ.

Why the Japanese Hate the iPhone

The title is a little bit misleading: the Japanese really suck at hating someone or something. About the iphone, there is no hate or love in Japan. They think it is really cool, but they are just not interested.

The problem is that the iphone came too late to Japan. Just after the first version of the iphone was released, the Japanese carriers introduced an armada of "smart phones" with the ridiculous features, including a hi-res videocam, etc., and the ridiculous price tags. However, most people interested in those high-tech phones could get one almost free because they were given away with a two year contract (the promotion like this iphone giveaway is actually quite common in Japan.) In other words, almost every customer who is potentially willing to buy an iphone is still bound by the two year contract, which started about a year ago. So what would they do if they want something like an iphone now?

The answer is they buy netbooks. It could be actually cheaper to buy a cell phone with a video cam, and one of the Japanese superslim notebooks, which they would carry in their man-bags or the back pockets anyway. Saying that the iphone is much better at browsing the web is like saying that the iphone is much better at gaming. For gaming, Japanese people would just buy a Nintendo DS.

In my opinion, Apple simply lost this market. Japan is a very easy place to find a competitive combination of alternatives which can provide every iphone's feature in a much better way. To the Japanese, the iphone is nothing but a lousy cell phone (no video cam!) from a lousy carrier, lousy computer, and lousy game machine all combined in a pretty but too big enclosing.

Someone also commented that the iphone is not a big hit in Taiwan, either. I guess that the iphone will also suck in South Korea and China, too.
